Snubs and offscreen gossip led to nasty spat on tonight's 10 p.m. episode, but Sammi tells MTV News they're 'like family.'

"Jersey Shore" began not with a whimper but a bang on Thursday night (January 6), as Sammi and newcomer Deena hurled NSFW insults at each other and nearly came to blows.
But what sparked the two to fight so soon after meeting? Well, how long do you have to hear this tale? Suffice to say the pair were gearing up for a throwdown just minutes into the show's premiere episode, with Deena seething over the way Sammi snubbed her after they'd just met and Sammi fuming about rumors that Deena wanted to hook up with her boyfriend Ronnie and, as she put it to MTV News, "ruin the relationship right off the bat." Add a hefty dose of booze to the mix, and the whole thing was bound to combust.
Shortly before Thursday's episode aired, both women gave us their side of the story.
"I felt the need, that I had to stand up for myself," Deena told MTV News.
"I felt like, 'You know, what? I'm not going anywhere, I'm not leaving early. I'm here to stay — get out of here!' So that's what I did. I just put my foot down and was like, 'Don't laugh at me. Get real!' "
Sammi, for her part, was peeved about Deena's smack talk, but admitted she didn't handle the situation as gracefully as she could have. "Sometimes people are immature and like to say things behind other people's backs instead of to my face, but you know what? Everybody gets in their moments sometimes, including myself," she said. "Look at me, I'm giving her attitude right off the bat. I was a little bit immature myself. Everybody has these days where you're just like, 'Ugh,' when you can't stand the next person.
"I'm very stern in my opinions and I speak my mind," she added. "I never fought anybody in my entire life until Miami. Winning isn't everything, but I'm proud of standing up [for myself]."
But don't expect Sammi and Deena to keep up their war of words and the threat of violence for the rest of the season. According to Deena, they're just as quick to forgive as they are to get worked up. "We're like brothers and sisters. You fight and then the next day you're like, 'Wait, what happened?' " she said. "We're really like family."
Don't miss "Jersey Shore," airing Thursday nights at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.
